(09/26/00) Susan: Jim has been fighting off a painful infection for a month, and it finally started getting to him; he was feeling tired and nauseous, and as the baby had been sick and stressed as well, we decided to keep things very light today. Basically, we went out once to do some poking around right outside the hotel to pick up things that people had requested, and to do some fine dining in the hotel.
This is the engraver at Sherry's Place working on three copies of a picture of Meredith smiling - he's using a huge metal chisel and pounding small dents in the black granite's surface. Each one cost around 250 Yuan - about $42. One we keep, the other two go to the grandmothers. It's a slow, steady chip, chip, chip process.
Jim: In other words, it was much like the day before, except that I felt less like doing anything. I've had a horrible time since my reent trip to California with this infection / inflammation, and it's very painful now and makes you feel like you want to throw up all the time.
Susan and I ended up going to the main Chinese restaurant for lunch, and to the Cantonese for dinner. Again, we were gawked at a little, but passed it off for the same reasons. The food was universally marvellous, and I'd recommend these restaurants to anybody.
One note from yesterday: when we made our request for the chops; Sherry was surprised that we had Chinese names already cranked up and ready (with characters) for her chop engraver. I gather that people don't take that sort of trouble.
Susan went downstairs tonight for a lesson in how to fill out the forms for the baby's visa to the US that have to be submitted to the US Consulate here tomorrow, as part of our interview with them at 10 in the morning. As usual, our facilitator, Shasha, was complete and thorough in explaining it to everyone. So, w sleep and wait for the big day tomorrow.
